What’s up with the sudden tilt towards Arabian’s way of
dressing in Naija?
A friend of mine was in Vertigo lounge some months back to
hangout. He took pictures of himself and friends that came through for “show
off” to let us know how much fun he had. What I saw in the pictures are lovely,
but one thing that didn’t cease to amaze me was the number of guys and girls I
could count wearing Jalamia around him.
We are suddenly embracing the Arabians way of dressing and
one can’t bring forth an explanation to how we came about it. It’s what we see
some Muslims wear to mosque every Friday for Jumat but the new trend among
Naija youths now make us see it as normal outfit one can as well wear to club
and parties and functions.
In Naija, Jalamia Parties have been organized with some
Naija celebs in attendance, and most of them are used to headline the party in
most cases. One was organized for Davido shortly after he returned from South
Africa 2 months back and recently Reminisce was used as the star host of
another. At D’Banj’s DKM concert, held last month, Olamide came on stage
dressed in Jalamia and slippers. Not surprised about Olamide coming on stage
dressed like that because he wore same in his “First of All” Video.
Jalamia, Imported from the Arabian world, is a very simple long
dress that could be worn with slippers. With length
from your shoulder down to your toes, you don’t have to worry about the shoe
you are going to wear with it. Jalamia is the in-thing, worn by Nigerians home
and abroad, and many that can’t beat it are now joining it.
Hmmmm… Maybe designers , in the nearest future, would cloth runway models with Jalamia to display how creative they can be in terms
putting it together.
